Hebrew Title: “The Book of Praises” (tehillim)

Greek translation of the OT (the Septuagint) used psalmos for tehillim.  The word means “a song sung to the accompaniment of a stringed instrument.

The Vulgate followed the Septuagint and used psalmorum, from the Latin psalterium, “a stringed instrument.”  The King James Bible adopted the word, and thus we have the Book of Psalms.

  1.  The Way of the Righteous is Blessed (vs. 1-2)

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners,

nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.” Psalm 1:1-2 (ESV)

  • The Righteous DO NOT get their counsel from the world.

“You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion is not from him who calls you.” Galatians 5:7-8 (ESV)

  • The Righteous DO NOT stand in passivity or inaction in front of the lost.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 (ESV)

  • The Righteous DO NOT relax with the mockers.

“Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble he gives favor.” Proverbs 3:34 (ESV)

  • The Righteous DELIGHT in God’s Word.
  • The Righteous MEDITATES in God’s Word day and night.

“He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.” Psalm 1:3 (ESV)

(Jesus) “To grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.”  Isaiah 61:3 (ESV)

  • They will be productive and produce good fruit.

(Jesus) “So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.” Matthew 7:17-20 (ESV)

  • They will prevail during hard times.

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”  Jeremiah 17:7-8 (ESV)

  • They will prosper regardless of circumstances.

(Uzziah…16 yrs old) “He set himself to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God, and as long as he sought the Lord, God made him prosper.” 2 Chronicles 26: 5 (ESV)

“The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous…” Psalm 1:4-5 (ESV)

They will…

  • Walk in the counsel of the world.
  • Stand in passivity and inaction towards the sinner.
  • Sit with the mockers of God.
  • Not delight in the Word of God.
  • Not meditate on God’s Word day and night.
  • Unstable in all they do.
  • Be unjustified on the Day of Judgement.

“And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” Revelation 20:13-15 (ESV)

  • Not be among the congregation of the righteous.

“And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, 25 and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. 26 They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. 27 But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” Revelation 21:22-27 (ESV)

“..,for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.” (Psalm 1:6 (ESV)

  • The Lord knows the way of the Righteous and they will live.

“For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” Matthew 7:14 (ESV)

  • The Lord knows the way of the Unrighteous and they will perish.

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.”  Matthew 7:13 (ESV)
