The promise of the Holy Spirit

The promise of the Holy Spirit

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever,” John 14:16

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.” Acts 2:1-4

“When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart…” Acts 2:37a

37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” Acts 2:37-39

2 WAYS TO KNOW YOU HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT

  • GIFTS of the Holy Spirit
  • FRUIT of the Holy Spirit

GIFTS-

If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:1-3

FRUIT-

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23

“The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.” Galatians 5:19-21

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.” Ephesians 4:30-31

“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25

How Do We Do That?

  1. REPENT
  1. SURRENDER
  1. ASK

“If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Luke 11:13

Acts 4:8– “Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and he said to them…”

Acts 4:25– “You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant.”

Acts 4:31– “They were filled with the Holy Spirit and they spoke the word of God.”

Acts 2:4– “They were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began speaking in other languages as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.”
