MANGER: A picture of God’s humility

MANGER: A picture of God’s humility

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.” Luke 2:4-7

Reasons behind the mystery of the manger

  1. GOD WANTED TO IDENTIFY WITH US IN OUR STRUGGLES.

Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” Matthew 8:20

When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, ‘He is out of his mind.’” Mark 3:21

“Even my close friend whom I trusted, he who shared my bread, has lifted his heel against me.” Psalms 41:9

“He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities.” Isaiah 53:5

Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:16

  1. GOD WANTED TO SET AN EXAMPLE OF HUMILITY FOR US TO FOLLOW.

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” Philippians 2:3-8

  1. GOD WANTED TO DEMONSTRATE HIS POWER.

“Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.” 1 Corinthians 1:26-29

For what gives you the right to make such a judgment? What do you have that God hasn’t given you? And if everything you have is from God, why boast as though it were not a gift?” 1 Corinthians 4:7 (NLT)

  1. GOD WANTED TO MAKE A STATEMENT OF HIS INCREDIBLE LOVE FOR YOU.

“And she gave birth to a son; she wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger.” Luke 2:7
